Companies working within the oil sands are performing well, but they’re producing far less than initial estimates expected at the outset of many projects. Learning to cut costs wherever possible is a must for most companies. One option the mining giant Suncor is considering? Self driving trucks.
Technology Changes the Financial Picture
Suncor’s AHS (autonomous hauling systems) are guided by GPS. They include collision avoidance systems to help make them safer. The company’s goal is to include 150 AHS over the course of the next six years. The reason for the switch is cost savings, as currently they employ about 1400 drivers between their two mines.
The Route to Faster Savings
While Suncor’s plans may mean big savings, many other companies have found far faster energy savings by deploying Komax equipment throughout the process. At Komax, we’re working to develop equipment specifically designed for oil sands companies. With tougher, more durable options, the process of extracting bitumen is faster and smoother, and for most companies, that spells a cost savings you simply won’t find with other equipment. From options like our Tailings Solvent Recovery heater that features a long operating life and low noise to our Teflon and Kynar lined mixers, designed specifically for in-line chemical addition in less space, we have what oil sands companies need to get the job done quickly.
Self driving trucks may be on the horizon to help oil sands companies save money, but with Komax, the chance to save more is already here.
